Whatever your political position, we can all definitely agree that the War in Iraq has become one of the most controversial issues in this country’s history. The reasons why the United States went in have never been fully explained by the politicians. Some say its for oil, money, or WMDs.
After September 11, many nations had come together to invade Afghanistan and overthrow the Taliban regime that had been harboring Al Qaeda terrorist. With the success of the their war in Afghanistan, the United States next turned their attention towards Iraq. Iraq has been a long-standing rival against the U.S. War against Saddam was imminent.
During President Clinton’s presidency, bomber missions were flown in the “No-fly” zone of Iraq in the hopes that Saddam would be overthrown by his own people. This did not come to fruition. Saddam had been rumored to be harboring terrorists and possessing weapons of mass destruction. Although these rumors were false, America and Britain still hold their grudges against Iraq.
In 2003, a strong coalition of nations invaded Iraq. With a month, the country was overtaken. The Iraqi army was disbanded and Saddam had gone into hiding. President Bush declared “Mission Accomplished.” That’s when we thought the fighting was over. Well after five years, the fighting has grown worse than ever. Civil war had broken out, Al Qaeda has made Iraq a fighting ground, the government in place is corrupt and it seems as though any day now that country will truly fall into chaos.
