The Sun is the star that is the center of the Solar System. The Sun holds 99.8% of the Solar System’s mass and is about 96 million miles away from Earth. The energy (light) that comes from the Sun supports life on Earth and drives the Earth’s climate and weather. The surface of the Sun consists of mostly hydrogen and helium, with traces of other elements such as nickel, iron, oxygen, silicon, magnesium, neon, carbon, calcium, and chromium. It has a temperature of about 5,500 degrees Celsius. It is believed that the Sun formed around 4.59 billion years ago.
