Cormac McCarthy is widely known as one of the greatest writers living today. After his famous novel, No Country for Old Men, was adapted into the Award-winning film, there was a renewed interest in McCarthy’s work. Recently his novel The Road, has been adapted into a feature film starring Viggo Mortensen. It is scheduled for wide release early next year.

The Road is the story of a father and son trying to survive after nuclear holocaust has wiped out much of life on earth. The story is interesting, in that it does not say exactly how the main characters arrived in their situation. They are just caught up in the most dire of circumstances and must band together to stay alive as long as they can. There main objective is to reach the coast, yet they do not know what they will find there, only that they must get there as fast as possible.

Throughout the novel, the relationship between the father and son is put to the test. The story shows how far a father will go to keep his son alive. This is an excellent read not only for science-fiction lovers, but all readers alike. Be sure to check out the film when it is released.
