Bastian is a young shy boy. He does good in school and makes his father proud. But he is lonely with no friends and is still upset over the loss of his mother. One day on his way to school, while trying to evade a group of bullies, he hides in a book shop. The owner of the shop is an old cranky man who tells Bastian of the true powers the written word contains. A book entitled The Neverending Story catches the young boy’s eye and he quickly grabs it and runs when the owner is in the next room.

Already late for class, Bastian decides it would be best to not waist the day doing nothing. He locks himself in the attic of the school and begins to read the book. The story is about a land known as fantastica. This land is under the threat of extinction from a terrible force known as the nothing. The nothing is a dark force which is erasing all of the land. The occupants go to the empress looking for answers. With the land dieing, so too is the empress. The leaders appoint a young boy named Atreyu to heal the land.

Atreyu sets out on his long adventure not knowing what to do our where to go. He looses his horse in a swamp and is forced to walk many miles. All this time, he is being pursued by a wolf-like creature named Gmorg who is a servant of the nothing. A luck-dragon named Falkor saves Atreyu and brings him to the home of friendly gnomes who nurse him back to health. Atreyu learns he must go to the last lengths of the land to the southern oracle.
