The Mystery behind Hauntings

Throughout the centuries thousands have reported ghost sightings, even attacks. But what does this all mean? Who are these ghosts and why do they choose to dwell among us? Their are many theories as to why they are being seen. I consider ghosts to be spirits who have unfinished business to attend to. They did not complete what they set out to do in life or had abrupt endings. They remain here to make people realize their story.

When people die, their soul leaves their body. They see a white light which they can follow which will lead them to the afterlife. We even in death have a choice to stay behind or go into the light. These apparitions which we witness are people who chose to stay behind for some reason. Whether or not they will make a difference is up to speculation. People who have told stories of being attacked by ghosts could mean that the spirit is angry and is thirsty for revenge. But no one can truly know the meaning behind this phenomenon.

I enjoy watching and reading science fiction it makes one wonder where technology will lead us and what may be the next great invention for many of our modern convinces were born out of science fiction were inventors dared to dream. I watch the science fiction channel quite a bit on TV. One show that I started watching is called Ghost Hunters. Where a group of individuals goes off to a supposed haunted site and tries to collect data to either disprove or prove reports of paranormal activity. They use cameras and recorders and electro magnet field detectors and temperature sensors to collect this data on their investigations. To their credit they do not use mediums to try to establish any contact.
Now I am a skeptic. The way I was brought up in traditional Christian values once you were dead either you were in heaven or hell and you were not coming back. I also am a combat veteran and have been around the dead and believe you better worry about the live ones. I have hunted and fished been out all hours of the day and night been in all kinds of places and never saw or heard anything that could not be explained. Well I scoffed a lot at this show, Making fun of the investigators as they went along recording and asking questions to no one there and filming into the dark. I thought this show would not last long, for in the end of the first several shows I saw their ended up being no evidence of any ghost. Well one night while watching the show the investigators were at St. Augustine Lighthouse. To my amazement they caught an apparition on film. It was looking over the railing of the stairs of the lighthouse and going up the stairs. It made my skin get goose bumps all over to actually see this. Since then on other investigations that I watched they have caught apparitions on film and thermal camera and what they call electronic voice phenomenon on tape. Again I was amazed and wondered if it were Hollywood special effect and it started making me think. I wanted to know the truth. So I started studying ghost hunting and their thoughts on the cause of these phenomenon. All this reading on others thoughts only caused me to have more questions and some of the ideology just did not sit well with me. It just sounded wrong. So I thought, I would research what the bible says about ghost. Before beginning this research I prayed and asked God to give me the wisdom and knowledge to discern the truth about this topic and enlighten me and show me the truth as to help me and possibly others to understand. Here is my findings as I was led thru the scripture.
First let me say that to accept my findings one must believe that Jesus was the son of God and was sent here as an incorruptible sacrifice for the remission of mankind’s sins and the Bible is complete truth and has no errors.

Christ describes the attributes of a ghost:
KJV Luke 24: 36-43 And as they thus spake, Jesus himself stood in the midst of them, and saith unto them. Peace be unto you. But they were terrified and affrighted and supposed that they had seen a spirit. And he said unto them, why are ye troubled? And why do thoughts arise in your hearts? Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have. And when he had thus spoken, he shewed them his hands and his feet. And while they yet believed not for joy, and wondered he said unto them, Have ye here any meat? And they gave him a piece of broiled fish and of honeycomb. And he took it and, did eat before them. In this instance Jesus doesn’t say anything like “Don’t be silly, ghosts are just tall tales and don’t really exist.” He instead lists specific physical traits of ghosts. They don’t have flesh and they don’t have bones and they certainly don’t eat broiled fish. Was he making these traits up about some imaginary entity since he was perfect and could not lie, I don’t believe he was making up these traits.

    KJV Matthew 14: 25-27
And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea. And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying. It is a spirit; and they cried out for fear. But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying, Be of good cheer; it is I ; be not afraid. Again here he did not dispute there were such things as ghost.
So what are ghost? Are ghost human spirits still lingering on earth? Hebrews 9:27 states we live once and die once, and after this we face the judgment. In Luke 23: 43 Jesus said to one of the thieves crucified with him, that today you surely will be with me in paradise. 2 Corinthians 5: 8 in speaking of Christians tells us that to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. In Luke 16: 19-31 Jesus tells the story of a lost man who went to hell. He could not get out to communicate with his brothers so that they would not endure the same fate. And Lazarus would not leave heaven on the lost mans request to communicate with them either. So according to Jesus, Heaven and Hell are real places and the inhabitants can’t or won’t leave them respectively and again Jesus being perfect he can’t lie.
So from this we can conclude that humans who have died are not the source of ghost or spirits. So again what are these things that are being brought forth in the Ghost Hunters shows? There’s no neutral or middle ground. There’s no grey or fuzzy areas when it comes to spiritual matters. The Bible, from cover to cover, always compares and contrasts only two sides. Every spirit in existence is either holy, serving Christ, or unholy, being against Christ.
KJV 1 John 4.1-3 Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world. Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God. And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.
These spirits being investigated are not bring a message from beyond the grave and they are not by comparison angels either. Nowhere in scripture can the holy angels of God ever be found haunting any place, thing or geographic area for no apparent reason, causing fear and confusion. They are never seen being summoned by the will of man. Although they are seen appearing in the form of man. In every instance of angels they had a clear message and purpose for being there. The servants of God in biblical scripture never had to investigate to obtain a message from a holy angel. In the first chapter of the book of Hebrews, Paul gives instruction specifically on the holy angels of God. Verse 14 is where he writes, “Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation?” The word of God says these holy angels are sent forth, not summoned. So if it is not human spirits or angels what does that make them? It must make them devils or demons.
Can this idea of these spirits being devils or demons be proved? In my search for the answer, I found this scripture. Matthew 12: 43-45 When an unclean spirit goes out of a man, he goes through dry places, seeking rest, and finds none. Then he says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came.’ And when he comes, he finds it empty, swept, and put in order. Then he goes and takes with him seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter and dwell there; and the last state of that man is worse than the first. So shall it also be with this wicked generation.”
Lets break this scripture down some and look at it closely. “When an unclean spirit” this is referring to a demon. “Goes out of a man” Man being a person that was host to the spirit. The reason the spirit left is either the person was cleansed by exorcism, accepted Christ or perhaps they died. For demons will not leave freely of their own will out of a host. They go through dry places. Now let’s interpret “dry places” If you are drinking water from a glass and it becomes dry, your glass is empty. So one could say empty places. Such as where one would consider an old empty building. But the spirit is not content here it finds no rest. A restless spirit is a ghost. This spirit, it wants a host, so it returns to a host.” it’s house”. So it leaves its dry place and takes others with it to find a host to enter and to make this host and their state worse than the first host. So the knocking and voices and temperature changes and apparitions in these places are demons looking for a host. They are not dear departed great grandmother trying to communicate.
The scripture calls Satan the father of lies and the great deceiver. Evil spirits have been practicing identity theft for thousands of years. There is an example of this in the bible in 1 Samuel 28: 7-19 where King Saul consulted a medium to bring forth Samuel. The mediums familiar spirit or ghost which we know is a demon presented itself as Samuel and foretold Saul his future. These same evil spirits that are present today were here before and when your great grandmother was a little girl. These same evil spirits will easily know “all about her” or the “things that only she would know”. They will come across as kind, helpful or fun loving or as a child to deceive you. We should not try to consult with these spirits. In Deuteronomy 18:9-14 Moses warns us about unholy practices stating that anyone “who practices divination, or is a soothsayer” (one who has spiritual insight or is able to foretell events), “or an augur” (one who foretells future events by interpreting omens), “or a sorcerer” (wizard, conjurer, or magician), “or one who casts spells, or one who consults ghosts or spirits, or seeks oracles the dead. For whoever does these things is abomination to the Lord”. Astrology and horoscopes fall under these categories. Abominable is the strongest condemnatory language used by God in the entire Bible.
So how are these spirits manifesting the evidence? Ephesians 2:2 states, Satan’s kingdom is the power of the air. So the idea is that demonic presence can be detected through a scientific study of the atmosphere such as temperature, barometric pressure, magnetic fields, electrostatic discharges, or sound waves thru the air and the refraction of light or shadows in the air is supported by scripture. The Bible identifies all idol gods as being devils and therefore evil spirits (1 Corinthians 10.19-20). Should the scriptural examples be the basis for such a doctrine? Yes, because in the scripture of II Timothy 3.16, the apostle Paul taught the Christian that, “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.
Now I ask should we ghost hunt? Ghost hunting almost always leads to ghost busting which is nothing but exorcism. Will a man disobey God in pursuing ghost hunting and yet use God’s power in ghost busting? Jesus being God himself, expelled demons and put them to flight by his word alone. His followers, having no power of themselves, cast devils out by the power that’s in his name. However, it must be noted and understood that exorcism can and does take place in the name of false Christs. Jesus warned in St. Matthew 7.22-23 saying, “Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name, and in thy name have cast out devils, and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you; depart from me, ye that work iniquity. This is the terrible deception to which one exposes himself if one practices ghost hunting and busting. An example is found in Acts 19.13-17. Then certain of the vagabond Jews, exorcists, took upon them to call over them which had evil spirits, the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, We adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preacheth. And there were seven sons of one Sceva, a Jew, and chief of the priests, which did so. And the evil spirit answered and said, Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but, who are ye? And the man in whom the evil spirit was, leaped on them, and overcame them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded. And this was known to all the Jews and Greeks also dwelling at Ephesus, and fear fell on them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified. So unless we come under attack by these spirits and ghost which we now know are demons do not try to seek them out and try to exorcise them. What have idols to do with the evil spirits that ghost hunters investigate and try to capture their image? Everything, as it’s seen in scripture that God commanded the absolute destruction of any and all images and pictures of any kind of evil beings. Exodus 23.24, Leviticus 26.30, Numbers 33.52, Deuteronomy 7.5, 2 Kings 23.24, Jeremiah 8.19. So the answer is no we should not seek these spirits to capture their sounds and images to prove they exist.
I believe the people on the show Ghost Hunters are not bad people. They are good people looking for answers. Unfortunately they are misinformed and looking in the wrong place for the answers they seek. They are unknowingly in spiritual danger. We should pray for them. As said before the ghost which we know to be demons wants a host. How do we know this? In Mark 5:9 and Luke 8:30 When Jesus had His notorious confrontation with the Gadarenes Demoniac called “Leigion” the evil spirits in the man pleaded and begged Jesus not to send them to the “deep” or “abyss” which is hell before the appointed time, but to allow them to enter the pigs. The reasons for Jesus allowing this can be heavily debated, however the fact is that evil spirits would rather inhabit living creatures. Suffice it to say that if they would be content to dwell in a pig, they would surely be more pleased to enter into a human being.
Now I must address two instances that can be misunderstood in Matthew 27:52-53 it states upon Jesus resurrection the tombs were opened and the bodies of the saints arose and came forth out of the tombs. They went into the holy city and appeared to many. These were not ghost. We read, they had bodies and spirits. These saints were resurrected with Jesus as a miracle and as witness to help proclaim the fulfillment of the prophecy. Also in Mark 9:4 states that upon Jesus’ transfiguration, Elijah and Moses was seen talking with him. Again this was fulfillment of prophecy. In Mark 9 ,Jesus also said, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see that the kingdom of God has come in power.” and he also said Elijah will indeed come first and restore all things, yet how is it written regarding the Son of Man that he must suffer greatly and be treated with contempt? But I tell you that Elijah has come and they did to him whatever they pleased, as it is written of him.”
So don’t seek out these evil spirits the Bible tells us Jesus said, “I am going to sit at the right hand of my father and when I do I will send a helper to you.” the “helper” Jesus was referring to was the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit first appears at the beginning of Jesus’ ministry, when he is baptized. Shortly before his crucifixition. Jesus characterizes the Holy Spirit to his disciples as the ‘Spirit of Truth’. and refers to it as our comforter. It was fully descent upon the Apostles and made available to Jesus’ followers on the day of Pentecost So what should we seek? Mathew 6:33 Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and all his righteousness; and all these things will be added unto you. So let’s not seek among the dead or consult ghost for our answers. Seek the truth with diligent study of God’s word in the Bible. All that contradicts God’s word is a falsehood, regardless of how real it may appear, regardless of how many witnesses may attest to it.

Excellent testimony to the truth! Now we just have to pray that people will not be deceived by their own pride to believe what the world around them believes. Thank you.
