The Myrtles Plantation

December 12th, 2008

The Myrtles Plantation is located in St. Francisville, Louisiana and has been called one of the most haunted homes in America. The house was built in 1796 by General David Bradford. General Bradford moved to Louisiana because he had to move from his home in Pennsylvania due to his role in the Whiskey Rebellion. He originally purchased 600 acres from Spain and built a nice eight room house that he called the Laurel Grove. He died in 1817, but the plantation stayed in his family. His daughter Sarah Mathilda and her husband Clark Woodruff inherited it and planted indigo and cotton.

Slaves were brought in herds to work the fields here. Most of the ghost legends trace back to the times when Myrtles was an active plantation. The most famous legend is probably that of a slave girl named Chloe. Woodruff started to have sexual relations with Chloe and she didn’t refuse this because it was better than working all day in the field.

Eventually, Woodruff grew tired of Chloe and started to have relations with another slave. Chloe went to eavesdrop of to whether or not Woodruff was going to put Chloe back in the fields. She was caught trying to listen, and as punishment one of her ears was cut off. For the rest of her life, she would wear a piece of green fabric to cover the hideousness of the scar. Chloe then poisoned a birthday cake for the children in hope that when they got sick they would be in need of her help. However, this plan backfired when she used too much poison and ended up killing all three of the children. The other slaves feared reprisal from the family so they dragged her outside and hung her on a tree. After she was killed, her body was thrown into the river. People have reported seeing Chloe all over the plantation with her green garment. Unexplained smells and noises are also prevalent on the plantation, with a mirror by the staircase where the spirits who were murdered there manifest themselves.
