Machu Picchu is a pre-Columbian Inca site that is located 8,000 feet above sea level and sits above the Urubamba Valley in Peru. It is one of the most famous sites of the Inca Empire. Built around 1460, Machu Picchu was abandoned roughly 100 years later at the time of the Spanish Conquest of the Inca Empire. It is said that it had been forgotten about for many years until Hiram Bingham in 1911 brought it to worldwide attention. There are many theories as to how this historical site was used. One such theory is that Machu Picchu is a settlement that was built to control conquered regions while others believe that it was used as a prison for those who created heinous crimes against the Incas.
So what exactly was this pre-historic site used for? I guess we will never know. For now, we have to just look at the facts and decide for ourselves thisĀ mystery.
