You sit down in a quiet theater or in front of your television at home. Within seconds, haunting vocals come out of the speakers and a mysterious voice tells us the story of another world. For the next three hours, you are transported to another realm of reality: J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle Earth. Any film that can do this to an audience member surely must be something special. Well, its almost no surprise this film was something special. This is the first installment of the famous book trilogy written decades ago that has been the number two most read book after the Bible. Peter Jackson, director of Heavenly Creatures and The Frighteners, has brought to life the wonderful story that readers have enjoyed for years.
This film tells the story of a young hobbit named Frodo Baggins who comes into the possession of a magic ring. He is told by the wizard Gandalf that this ring is evil and was created by the Dark Lord Sauron in the land of Mordor. Frodo sets out on a quest with a band of heroes to destroy the one ring and cleanse middle-earth of its suffering. However, danger lies at almost every turn. Frodo must evade the forces of evil and journey far from home to complete his dangerous quest.
What makes this film so enjoyable is not its action sequences or its use of computer-generated imagery, it is the characters. Rarely does a film come out that has characters that anyone can relate too. The Fellowship also tells us a thing or two about who we are as people. We are made up of many different races and cultures. In a time of tragedy, we must depend on each other to see us through the darkness. This is what makes this movie one of the best of all-time.
