Thanks to the film and novel The Da Vinci Code, the legends surrounding the story of the Knights Templar have come to the forefront of history. This controversial fraternal organization was responsible for much of the Church’s power. The organization lasted for two centuries in the Middle Ages, founded in the aftermath of the First Crusade in the 1090s. The original purpose of the group was to ensure the safety of Christians who made the pilgrimage to Jerusalem after its conquest.

When the war in the Holy Land began, the Knights Templar fought against the conquering Muslim army. Legend says the the Knights Templar were sent to Jerusalem to find a lost artifact that the church needed. The Da Vinci Codestates that this was the sarcophagus of Mary Magdalene. Years later the Templars had become too powerful and had spread all over Europe. The church issued out orders that the members of this organization be killed. On Friday the 13th, hundreds of innocent people were burned alive at the stake.
