The Hitchhiker of Route 44
photo taken from flickr.com
One of the most famous ghosts in Massachusetts is in Rehoboth along route 44. A redheaded man has been seen walking along this road for nearly 30 years now. He is either seen walking into the woods, hitchhiking, or standing in the middle of the road waiting for a car to go right through him. Also, it has been reported that a man was driving 40 miles an hour and still saw the figure of this man along the road. No one has any idea who this man is however.
Few men have died on this road, but one of these men fit the description of the ghost. No one will ever know for sure who he really is though. His features are described as being 6 feet tall, having good frame, and red hair with a red beard. He is also seen wearing jeans and always has on a red flannel shirt either tucked in or out. Sometimes he looks well groomed, and other times he looks very messy. Most people can tell that he is not human through the apparent lifeless eyes that he possesses.
The encounters with this ghost usually happen the same way. A person drives along the road, usually alone, and sees a man in or near the side of the road. They will either hit him if he is in the middle of the road, or pick him up if he is on the side. If he is picked up, he will interact with the person for a short period of time and then vanish before their eyes. This is then followed up by hearing him either laughing or taunting at the person. There have been many instances like this including one time when a woman picked him up and vanished. The car battery died with his laughter on the radio. The local legend is if three people are driving in the car, the man will appear in the fourth seat.

er…that photo leading the article off was just a bit inaccurate. It shows Rt. 44 in Seekonk, looking west toward East Providence, just where Rt. ll4A intersects it. Quite a bit west of where the ghost is said to appear. Just for what it’s worth…
