The Hearthstone Inn
The Hearthstone Inn is located in Colorado Springs, Colorado and is comprised of two Victorian mansions. The first of these was built in 1885 and was home to the Judson Moss Bemis family. The second was built in 1900 and served as a boarding house for patients with tuberculosis. These people came here because they wanted the dry air to help relieve some of the symptoms of the disease. Since 1978, the mansions have become the Hearthstone Inn which is a beautiful bed and breakfast.
David Oxenhandler and his wife purchased the inn in 1999. Ghost talk had been a topic for discussion, but they seemed to have increased after lightning stuck a tree right outside of the inn in the summer of 1999. The day after this, a person checked in a room on the third floor but asked for a room change a few minutes later without explaining why. There was a mahogany mirror face-down in the hallway and was placed back by one of the workers. The next day, another person checked into the same room, but this time the person came down and wanted a room change because he said that the mirror in the room floated off the wall and landed on the ground.
The hauntings in the inn are believed to come from a few former tuberculosis patients that stayed in the building. The spirit of Alice Bemis Taylor who was the daughter of Judson Moss Bemis, and a man who hung himself on the third floor are two such spirits. Alice Bemis Taylor donated two other buildings to the Colorado Springs area. Both of these buildings also reported seeing the ghost of Alice within their walls. Sometimes, she is reported being seen in all three of these buildings on the same night, making her one of the most active and unique ghosts in all of many investigator’s research.
