The Ghost of the “Squirrel Cage” Prison
In Council Bluffs, Iowa lies one of the most unique prisons ever created. The official name of the jail was the Pottawatomie County Jail but was known as the Squirrel Cage. The jail’s design was unprecedented, consisting of three stories and pie-slice shaped cells that were arranged in a circle. Another words, there was only one door on each floor, and the only way to get in or out was to rotate a crank to line up the door with each cell.
The jail was built in 1864 and remained open until 1964. Since its so unique, it has stayed open as a tourist attraction and became a historic building. The jail is said to be haunted by the first superintendent it ever had whose name was J.M. Cater. He lived on the fourth floor apartment above the three jail levels. He spent more time in that prison than any other prisoner and when he died and has never really left. He’s been seen, heard, and the most reported has sensed uneasy eyes watching over them.
