The Ghost of “Resurrection Mary”

September 19th, 2008

“Resurrection Mary” is one of the best known and most widely-told ghost hitchhiker stories in modern folklore. In 1939, Mary Bregavy was killed in a car accident on her way home from a night-out at the O’Henry Ballroom. She was then laid to rest in Resurrection Cemetery, located in Justice, Illinois. Ever since, people have reported seeing a blonde woman walking up and down the road near the cemetery looking to hitch a ride. People that did pick her up said she asked to be taken to the O’Henry Ballroom. Also, a different variation of the story is that certain young men have danced with Mary at the ballroom. She would then ask for a ride home, and if they agreed to take her home, she would direct the men to a spot near the cemetery and would walk out and disappear.

In 1977, a motorist reported to the police a woman being trapped in the cemetery. He saw a ghostly figure who was bending the bars of the gate as if she was trying to escape. Presently, it’s common for people to report seeing “Resurrection Mary” in and around the ballroom and the cemetery where she seemingly lies awake.
