The Ghost of Madame Mineurecanal

Not too much information is known about Madame Mineurecanal, except for the fact that she was a quiet old lady who was seen walking her dog around the Marigny neighborhood in New Orleans, Louisiana. She would nod to other people but never stop for an actual conversation. No one ever knew about her miseries and failures in life. Her husband was killed in the Spanish-American War of 1898, and her son left home one day and never came back, leaving her all alone. She then died alone in the first decade of the 20th century. Her death is now linked to paranormal experiences at her old home on Royal street. One afternoon, Madame Mineurecanal climbed her stairs to third floor attic.

She stood up on a chair and put a noose around her neck. She caught a glimpse of her dog and saw him whimpering. In order to put him out of his misery, she took the dog and strangled him. She then hung herself. Stories of hauntings starting to come about after World War II, when the Ruez family moved in. They reportedly would hear strange sounds at night and see the apparition of Madame Mineurecanal. She appeared in a long white dress, with long dark hair, and bulging eyes.

She has been seen in the second floor hallway, on the attic stairs, in the bedrooms, and at the front door. Her dog always still seems to accompany her on these ghostly endeavors. The sounds heard include a dog panting, a woman’s moaning, and creaking sounds from the attic. The sightings of the ghost by the Ruez family were scary and associated with bad luck. On the sidewalk near the house on 2606 Royal Street, Madame Mienurecanal’s presence is still felt in the form of cold spots, perhaps still walking her beloved dog outside.
