The Ghost of Fort Warren

Fort Warren is located on Georges Island in the Boston Harbor and is haunted by a ghost wearing a black dress. During the Civil War, the fort was used as a prison for Confederate soldiers and had a bad reputation known as the “Corridor of Dungeons.” The prison had very tight security and since it was on an island, it was almost impossible to escape. One of the prisoners names was Andrew Lanier and he was able to get a letter out to his wife about the prison. His wife, determined to have her husband back, planned an escape.

She came from Georgia with the help of a Southern Blockade runner and landed on Cape Cod. She disguised as a man and was rowed to the prison by a Confederate aide. She whistled a tune as a signal to her husband and he threw a rope over to her so she could see where he was. She slipped into a crevice by his cell and brought with her a pistol and pickax. There were about 600 prisoners and 80 Union soldiers patrolling the area.

The prisoners plan was to use the pickax and dig a tunnel from the cell into the prison yard. From there, they would overturn the Union soldiers, take over the fort, and turn the guns on the Boston Harbor. They were caught several weeks into digging and when this happened, Lanier’s wife shot her gun at a guard and in a freak accident, the gun exploded in her hand and a piece of metal hit her husband in the head, killing him. Andrew was buried in the fort cemetery and his wife was hanged for being a spy.

The last request of the widow was to be hung in women’s clothing and not the male clothes that she had on. The only thing the soldiers could find was a black garment since there were no women on the island. Shortly after her hanging, a guard reported a women dressed in black, pinned him up against the wall and tried to strangle him to death. There is also an image of a woman figure in black in the back of a photograph.
