The Ghost and Legend of La LLorna

October 3rd, 2008

Mostly among Mexicans and Mexican-Americans, there is a tale about a ghost that is referred to as La Llorna, or the weeping woman. There are many many different versions of this story, but for all intensive purposes, I’ll stick to its basic framework . La Llorna is the ghost of a woman who while alive, had several children. She fell in love with a man who didn’t want any children, so to compensate for this she drowned all of them. Grief stricken from this inhumane act, she eventually drowned herself.

Legend has it that since then, you can see the ghostly figure of La Llorna, usually wearing a black garment walking alongside the river. In recent culture, the legend also entails that if you do see the ghost of La Llorna, this is a sign of serious impending doom and that you will die within the next year. In a different spin on things, people have even reported talking to the woman, not knowing who she was until she would tell the horrible story of what she had done to her children.
