The End of Times Part III
I spent the next two days huddled in the darkness of the subway station. I survived on candy and soda from a vending machine by the foot of the stairs. It was during this time that I started to admire the design of the subway. Hundreds of people had spent years digging out these perfect tunnels. This was truly one of mankind’s amazing feats. But now what is it all for? Possibly most of mankind has been wiped out. Maybe these subways were built for a possible war and that is why I am here. God might have known that this would happen and these were made for transportation and safety.
I had not brought my watch with me. In my haste to get to safety, I had only brought my wallet with a few dollars and a credit card. So much use that would be. I decided I would spend a few more hours down here and then try to get above ground to see what fate awaits me. I drank a can of Sprite and then decided it was time. I went to the stairs. What could I use to pry open that door. It was made of iron and a man of my strength could not possibly life it. Suddenly, there was a loud outpouring of gas. A light began to blink and the door slowly opened.
This was truly amazing. It seems these doors were designed to open after a certain amount of time. I did not stay to observe. I put a few cans of soda and boxes of candy in a small bag and walked up the stairs. The sight before my eyes was terrifying. This image would never leave me for my remaining years. It has become en-grained in my memory.
