The Country Tavern

The Country Tavern is a quaint little restaurant with great food in Nashua, New Hampshire. It also is the place of a spirit who haunts the restaurant, who is even put on the menu. Elizabeth Ford is the name of the woman who is believed to haunt different areas in the restaurant, most often the kitchen and the ladies room. Elizabeth’s story goes back all the way to the 1700s, and is a tragic one at that.

Elizabeth married a sea captain and he would go away for long periods of times out to sea. In order to make her more comfortable while he was away on these trips, he built a house in 1741 on the grounds where the Country Tavern currently is. After coming home from a long trip, he saw Elizabeth with a newborn baby who was not his. He killed them both and buried them on the property.

There have been a number of buildings on the property since then, but the Country Tavern is the only place where Elizabeth has haunted. She plays with women’s hair in the ladies room and moves plates and glasses on the tables. People have seen her sitting in the upstairs dining room or from the outside window. She is described as wearing a white dress and having long white hair. Also, on one night a man reported seeing a door opening and closing on its own about twelve times and no one was there.
