The CharlesGate Hotel is without a doubt one of the most haunted places in Boston, Massachusetts. The stories of this hotel display the more unknown side of the city. The building opened in the late 19th century originally as a luxury hotel for only the rich and famous to stay at J. Pickering Putnam was the architect of the hotel, and designed it to be the centerpiece of Kenmore Square. However, there are certain designs to the building that he made which cannot be explained.
The top floor of the building cannot be seen from outside, and the east side of the building is shaped like a C. This allows only the people from across the street to see those apartments. Some people believe that Putnam belonged to a cult, and the hotel was meant to be a place for the paranormal. From 1947 to 1972 the building served as a dormitory for Boston University, and had the rumor for being haunted especially after a student killed himself in one of the rooms.
The building then became a tenement serving residents in Boston. In 1981, Emerson College than bought the building and by that time the building had a number of accidents and deaths. A little girl once died in the elevator shaft, and then during a flood several horses and the boys trying to save them all died in the basement. It is also believed satanic cults performed human sacrifices in the building as well. Students at Emerson College who lived in the building used the Ouija board on occasion and got back detailed responses to questions, and then the board would fly across the room. Students have also seen black figures and fogs roaming through the halls. Stereos and TVs mysteriously turn on and off and things disappear and turn up at random.
