The Charles Camsell Hospital

January 21st, 2009

The Charles Camsell Hospital is located in Edmonton, Alberta, and the building that stands originally opened in 1946. Since 1996, the building has been abandoned since the hospital shut its doors. The original part of the building that no longer exists was a tuberculosis sanatorium that reached its peak in the 1950s. Some of the patients in this sanitorium were put there by force, and other patients that had certain defects were sterilized without the patients approval. The hospital has bore witness to many deaths and tragic events, including in 1982, when a man working on the roof fell to his death.

The hospital is believed to be haunted, and people who just even walk past it feel as though there are hundreds of eyes looking at them through the boarded up windows. Satanic symbols and graffiti are a plethora on the fences, not helping the sites reputation as a dark and scary place. The fourth floor of the hospital was home to the psychiatric ward during its existence. On a recorder, the scream of a young woman has been captured there. A psychic believed this was the spirit of a teenage girl who had ripped her nails off from her fingers. The second floor was the surgical wing, and to this day there are still blood stains on the floor in one room. In the morgue, the elevator has been known to go up and down on its own accord. Footsteps are often heard, indicating that some of the patients still walk the halls, even in death.

I was a patient there almost every year the new CCH was constructed. It was an excellent hospital in its heydays. Now it’s abandoned and being vandalized by kids and they’re getting hysterical about it being haunted and all that. So sad to read it all ’cause it’s all Bullshit Man!

My daughter was born in the Charles Camsell in 1991 and I had surgery done there, the only reason it shut its doors was due to health cuts by the Alberta Government

Like any abandon building with bored or curious kids, theres going to be vandalization. I was born in the old CCH, had my 3 children in one that now stands. There is lots of history with First Nation people, the CCH and Edmonton. At one time, 1st nation people were not allowed to go to any hospital if they were sick, we had to go to our “own” hospital. Which is why this building was created. The reason it was closed was due to cut backs with the Healthcare system.

I live a few blocks away from the hospital, along 124St, I go past the hospital on a regular basis to get to Westmount center.
The place does really creep me out. As kids in the neighborhood our parents warned us to never go near the building, for good reason.

I warn all enthusiasts who want to go ghost hunting. This is not the place to go and have your jolly. The building is covered in Asbestos and many parts of the building including the floors and ceilings have fallen in, leaving holes and great gaps. A few years back a fire broke out in the roof, 3 firefighters were injured trying to get to the roof, falling through a unseen hole in a stair well. Many contracting groups have gone in and quit only after a few months stating the building is a “death trap” and should be brought down.

You have been warned, this is not a joke or game the place is too dangerous to go prancing around in even in the day light let alone the night. The only ghosts will be you because I can almost grantee no one will hear you scream if you get stuck or fall assuming you survive.

I was born there in 89. I asked my mom to show me where I was born when i was about 16, and as soon as I got out of the car to look around and walk around, I had a very almost tragic feeling, and that something was watching my every move, I also felt like I was welcome there, it was very werid.

Hello Allen, I am a published writer who is doing research on the old Charles Camsell Hospital: the history of the handicrafts program there, the experiences of native patients who were being treated there, far from their homes, etc. Would you happen to know anything about these things? Thanks, Elizabeth.

Hi Elizabeth, I believe this is where my grandmother was sent when she developed TB in the 1940′s. She was forcefully separated from her three young daughters in Ft. Chipewyan who were sent to Ontario to live with relatives. She died there three years later, alone. If there are tortured souls haunting those premises, I’m sure one of them is hers.

I’ve read a lot about the history of this building, and I don’t doubt the activity that happens due to the past and history.I have been there a few times, although I have never been inside. From the times I’ve been there I’ve never experienced anything out of the ordinary until recently, I believe about a month ago. I brought my friend, and cousin from lethbridge, who is somewhat of a skeptic and bad mouthing the facility and truly not a believer of the supernatural and occult. Until we experienced what happened that night….so we took a leisurely walk around the building, still at this point not experincing anything. So we hopped in the car and drove real slow past the building with our windows down, hoping to catch something out of the ordinary. Then we heard it! A faint scream, sounded like a womens scream, and reverberating from what seemed to be one of the lower floors possibly 3-4… I can honestly vouche that me n my friend/cousin all heard this, at first we were all in shock almost hoping we didn’t hear what we did….but fortunately or unfortunately which ever way you look at it, we did hear it and scared the shit out of 3 grown men! So on behalf of my experiences I would agree that the camsell is indeed a paranormal hot spot! You can feel the energy once you arrive on the premisis! I advise anyone who plans to experience this to be patient and respectful of the deceased, and neighboring houses chances are you’ll experience something! It took me 3 years of coming and going and about a hour and half that night before hearing the scream from inside the camsell! Soo good luck and be safe to all those exploring the hospital! I also wouldn’t recommend going in the facility I’ve been stopped by police on several occasions and the asbestos and toxins are a nasty health risk! It can and will kill you slowly if your not wearing a mask of some sort! And trust me my mother is sick from lung cancer and that’s from asbestos in old houses!!! Soo hope this helps and encourages/discourrages people!

It`s funny how you say vandalized by kids but really it could have been an adult. I bet you`ve never seen a kid vandalize the place but you decided to stereotype. Not to be rude, but next time you may wanna think about about what you`re going to say and see if it is going to offend anyone.

My grandfather was sent to this hospital and died in 1949; and my father says that Indian Affairs wouldn’t send his body home; so now we are trying to locate his burial site so that we can take our father there to see where he is buried. Someone told us that they buried “Indians” who died there in a cemetary near the Enoch Reserve. We would like to locate his grave before my father passes. My father has suffered a stroke and heart attack and we would like to get some information for him but we are not getting anywhere. Anyone with any ideas on where I can get some help in this matter would be appreciated. Email me at tsinhia@yahoo.ca.

I went to that place a few times when it was open and it was spooky then and now when I pass by it on the bus its true that you feel like your being watched as if theres people looking outside from their windows,,, I’d go there for a good ” scare ” but I value my life and wouldnt want to live with cancers that the place cause so I feel bad for the kids who do go in there or close to it because they will develope cancer and think back to the warnings. So if anyone knows people who want to go there or read these warnings,, take it serious and warn the ones who want to visit that place, Want a spooky feeling,, visit graveyards at night that will be just as good but do not be an A-hole by vandalising it that would be very disrespectful.. Happy Ghost adventures people

I had my tonsils taken out in ’92 and I never really seen anything happen there. Although, the hospital did sort of give me the creeps. I’m kind of sad that the hospital got abandoned because it seemed like a nice hospital to me. I never even realized it until like 10-12 years later or something when I went by there and saw it empty. That was when the hospital really scared me.

My friends and I went to the hospital, a few went in and the things captured on camera and the pictures taken are frightening. Five guys went in and all you could was a deathening scream coming from a woman. Anyone wanting the pictures or any information can contact me if theyd like. @ jill_renee@live.ca I also have my friends willing to give explanations and what they saw as well.
