The Boyfriend’s Death
In this legend, a young couple are parked in a lonely lover’s lane at night. The car will not start on their attempt to go home. The boyfriend says to the girlfriend that he will walk to the main highway to get help. The girl begins to panic after the boyfriend hasn’t returned for a long time. She sees strange shadows across the windshield and hears scratching noises on the roof. At dawn, a state police trooper arrives who tells her to leave the car and not look back. Despite the trooper’s orders, she does look back only to find her boyfriend’s lifeless body hanging upside down from a tree branch over the car with his fingernails scratching the roof and blood coming down the windshield. Some say that her hair had turned white because of the shock.
This urban legend became quite popular in the United States in the early 1960s.
