Burlington National Guard Armory

November 16th, 2009

Located in Burlington, Iowa, this National Guard Armory is different than others. For starters, those who have been in the armory have watched in amazement as doors opened and closed by themselves.

As for those who have worked there late at night, they’ve hood sounds of footprints and horses while being completely isolated.

Also, one witness while working on the computer suddenly saw the screen turn into the reflection of an old man staring back at the witness. There have been no explanations for these paranormal events.

Trunkless Tree

July 27th, 2009

trunkless-tree

Located in Bertram, Iowa, Campbell Cemetery is known to contain an urban legend. A trunkless tree is believed to have a presence in the cemetery.

A trunkless tree appears to be floating in mid-air, and according to legend, it is only seen when you go into the cemetery at night with your car and then immediately  turn the lights off.

What do you guys think of this legend? Could it be possible to have a tree standing without a base, or is this just a sight that the human eye cannot perceive?

Gypsy Graveyard

July 1st, 2009

gypsy-graveyard

Located in Algona, Iowa, there is a graveyard just north of the town. In this graveyard, there is a smaller one that is fenced off towards the rear. Back in the 1800s when Gypsy wagon trains would pass through the town, they would come across this graveyard. If there was a gypsy who was dying from illness, they would bury this person alive right at the spot because they were unable to stop. There was  also no hallowed ground to bury the gypsy in since they were on the move. To this day, the people of the town firmly believe that the graveyard is haunted, and if someone dares to venture beyond the small fenced in graveyard in the back, they will be cursed forever from the spirits of the gypsies.

Deer Woman

March 27th, 2009

Deer Woman, also known as Deer Lady, is a shape changing woman who originated from Native American mythology. This creature is believed to be seen in Oklahoma, Iowa, and most of the Pacific Northwest of the United States. She appears to people at random times either as an old lady, a young woman, or a deer. Some people describe her as having the upper body of a female, and the lower body of a white-tailed deer. She may appear to men as a beautiful woman, just behind a bush off the road. She lures them to come over to her, but when the men notice that she has brown deer eyes and hooves for feet, it is too late, and they are stomped to death.

Others believe that seeing the presence of the Deer Woman is a bad omen, a warning of imminent danger if you will. She is also believed to be quite a dancer, and has been known to join in on communal dances, but disappears once the music stops. This creature is similar to that of La Llorna in Mexico and the Southwestern United States. The physical deformity among an otherwise perfect female figure is a common theme for legendary figures. According to legend, she can be banished away by the use of chant and tobacco. Also, some say if you look at her hooves she will run away because her deformity is then noticed. The legend of the Deer Woman was featured as a character on the Showtime series: Masters of Horror.

The Villisca Axe Murder House

December 21st, 2008

On June 10th, 1912 a string of grisly murders took place at the house of J.B. Moore in the town of Villisca, Iowa. This incident would go on to become the worst mass-homicide in the history of the state of Iowa. There were eight victims that night, all of which were beaten to death. The murder weapon was located by the police which was an axe owned by Josiah Moore. It was found in a bedroom downstairs by the dead bodies of Lena and Ina Stillinger. There were many suspects for these murders but no one was ever charged.

To this day, the case has never been solved. The house is currently uninhibited, but it is known as a place of many hauntings. The current owner has restored the residence the way it looked in 1912 and charges a small fee for anyone who is brave enough to stay overnight. People have experienced the feeling of heaviness around the main stairwell. Videos and photographs taken revealed orbs and light trails. EVP recordings have also been a major part of the paranormal aspects in this establishment.

The physical hauntings are believed to occur at 2 a.m. At this time, a train passes through the town of Villisca. The whistle of this train is very loud and it is believed that the killer used this noise to mask the sound of the killings. This sound triggers the hauntings of the house to this day.

Investigators have reported a fog that begins when the whistle blows. The fog then moves from room to room, just as the killer must have done. Once the fog lifts, it is followed by the sounds of dripping, assumed to be that of blood.
