Superman Returns

Since the disaster of Superman IV in the 1980s, Hollywood seemed to be in no hurry to produce another Superman movie. Many pitches were made to Warner Brothers for possible films, but all were turned down. With the death of Christopher Reeve, now seemed the best time to produce a Superman film. Bryan Singer, the director of the first two X-Men films, pitched the idea of re-imaging the Superman mythology, while at the same time staying loyal to the tone of the first two Superman films. This idea went over well with Warner Brothers and the project was green-lit.
Bryan Singer felt that the best Superman films were the first two, so he wrote his script as a semi-sequel to these films. The story would take place a few years after the events of Superman II. By this time, Superman had left earth to look for the remains of his home planet, while Lois Lane has moved on and had a child. Lex Luthor, however, is still at large and his plans are more diabolical than ever. Singer chose to cast the role of Superman as almost a mirror image of Christopher Reeve. This choice went over well with fans and kept some kind of continuity between the films.
The movie cost hundreds of millions of dollars to produce and Warner Brothers was banking on this film to become a huge summer blockbuster. This paid off and the film earned millions of dollars world-wide, while only receiving mixed reviews from critics. Singer has announced a second film to be released sometime in 2010. As of now, the entire case will return. The film is said to be much more expensive and have more action than its predecessor.
