M. Night Shyamalan garnered critical acclaim with his 1999 suspense film The Sixth Sense. The film became the epitome of thriller films of the 1990s. With it’s twist ending and famous script lines, it has become known as Shyamalan’s best film to date. His second famous film went in a very different direction.

Instead of dealing with ghosts and evil spirits, he chose to set his mind on aliens. For this story, he would take the theory of crop circles one step further. These crop circles had been a mystery for decades. Many people believed they may either be a hoax or truly real. Shyamalan chose the latter.

Signs went into production in the fall of 2001. The film told the story of a former reverend and his family living in Pennsylvania next to a field of corn. One morning they wake up to discover a mysterious pattern in the field. With no apparent explanation, things slowly get worse. Crop circles begin to appear all over the world and it is soon revealed to be signals for an alien invasion.

Like most of his films, Shyamalan plays on our worst fears. He requires us t be totally invested in the story in order for us to believe what is going on. If we use simple human logic, we can see that this story is too far fetched to be believable. Yet is we suspend our disbelief for an entire two hours, this film can easily be one of the most intriguing and thrilling movies of Shyamalan’s entire career.
