Saint Katherine’s Abbey

March 22nd, 2009

Saint Katherine’s Abbey is located about two miles east of the village of Shanagolden, Ireland. It was one of Ireland’s earliest nunneries, built in 1298 for the Order of Saint Augustin. The abbey stayed in operation up until 1541. The hauntings here come from the legend of the earl and Countess of Desmond. They were running during a battle in the area, and the countess was hit with an arrow. The earl thought she was killed by the arrow, so he went bury her beneath the chapel’s altar. Allegedly, she was not actually dead, and when she awoke, no one was near her to hear her screams for help. Today, visitors to the site report hearing the sound of cries for help from the poor countess.
