Remagen Bridge Battle

By the spring of 1945, Nazi Germany’s plans for victory were all but gone. The Allied forces had advanced to the German border. Hitler’s last hope was the bridges which connected Germany to Belgium. His plan was to demolish every single bridge before the Allies crossed over the Rhine. One such bridge was near the small town of Remagen. This was the only bridge that the Germans had not destroyed. Allied tank divisions assaulted the bridge and took it fairly quickly despite two tries by the Germans to blow it. With tanks crossing the Rhine, Hitler wanted the bridge destroyed by any means possible. First he executed the German commander who had been in control of the bridges defense. Next, he fired a V2 rocket at the bridge, yet still it failed to collapse. God must have been on the Allies’ side.
