Project MK-ULTRA was the code name for a covert CIA mind-control and chemical interrogation research program, run by the Office of Scientific Intelligence. The project began in the 1950s and lasted through the 1960s and used United States citizens as their test subjects. Most of the evidence from this project stated that the project coordinators would use drugs and methodology to manipulate individual mental states and to alter brain function. This project was first brought to public attention in 1975 by the United States Congress through investigations by the Church Committee.
CIA Director Richard Helms ordered all MK-ULTRA files destroyed in 1973 but many believe that the operation had survived. You can find the aims and goals of the project here. As a result of this project, many have died by the drugs that they have consumed. Harold Blauer, a professional tennis player in New York City, died as a result of a secret military experiment involving MDA. The experiments performed were often practiced without the subjects’ knowledge or consent. The project was later named MK-SEARCH in 1964 and attempted to make a truth drug to interrogate Soviet spies. The project had many spin-offs and many subdivisions in testing and research.
