The rumor of the death of Paul McCartney circulated so quickly. It was so wide that many scholars for a brief period gave the stories their close attention. Andru J. Reeve proved, however, that the story began as a spoof by Midwestern American college students. This is a concise summary from Reeve’s book, Turn Me On, Dead Man: The Complete Story of the Paul McCartney Death Hoax:
“For a scant four weeks in the fall of 1969, Beatle-watchers held their collective breath as the rumored death of Paul McCartney became the bizarre focus of attention in countless broadcast studios and newsrooms worldwide.”
