Neil Armstrong

March 16th, 2009

In the history of NASA, no man has accomplished more than the legend himself, Neil Armstrong. Neil was considered the one of the most gifted pilots in his squadron during the Korean War. He faced odds and insurmountable odds and always kept his cool. From an early age, Neil had a fascination with aircraft and flight. He received his pilot’s license prior to earning his driver’s license.

Hoping to one day become a “hot shot” pilot, Neil went to Purdue University to study Aeronautical Engineering. He attended college on a naval scholarship that would require him to go on active duty once his studies had come to a close. His studies ended abruptly when the Korean War began. He received his pilot wings and flew numerous bombing missions over North Korea.

After the war had come to an end, he returned to school to resume his studies. There he would meet his wife, whom he still resides with to this day. He became a test pilot at Edward’s Air Force Base and flew numerous prototype aircraft. He even flew a few “Hops” with Chuck Yeager. He applied for astronaut training at the newly formed NASA and after years of flying, his dream finally came to fruition. He flew the Gemini-8 Mission and during this flight, the spacecraft began to spin out of control. Using his test piloting skills and calm mindset, he stabilized the craft and traveled back to Earth. This event made Neil a runner-up in the expected moon missions.

Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins were paired up with Neil to fly the first lunar mission. On July 20th, 1969, Neil Armstrong exited the lunar module and stepped into the pages of history, uttering the now world renown phrase, “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.”
