Mount Pleasant Cemetery
Mount Pleasant Cemetery is located next to the Police Academy on Thomson Road in Singapore. The cemetery was originally part of the 86ha Bukit Brown Chinese Cemetery. The land was bought by the colonial government in 1919, and then opened up as a cemetery in 1922. George Henry Brown bought the land and renamed it to Mount Pleasant. Due to the construction of the Pan-Island Expressway, the cemetery was split into two parts. Mount Pleasant has an incredibly more eery feel to it then Bukit Brown. The visitors to Mount Pleasant are a lot less than that of Bukit Brown, with most passing it by without even realizing that it is a cemetery.
The cemetery is lined with ancient tombs, many of them cracking from their age. At nightfall, the cemetery is completely dark, with basically a level of zero percent visibility. Local people believe that the cemetery is haunted by the evil spirit of Pontianak. She flies over the trees at night, as her laughter echoes through the dark night. Pontianak comes from the Malay Legend of a female spirit who was cursed, as she died during childbirth. Before the site was bought by George Brown, the land was a Javanese village that was heavily populated by people who practiced black magic. One of the popular things to do back then was to create and control Pontianak for their own doings. According to legend, men were killed on the field of the cemetery with their bodies completely torn up. The Pontianak was the only suspected killer for this massacre.
