Mount Ozore
Mount Ozore is located in Osorezan, Aomori Prefecture, Japan. Mount Ozore is a dormant volcano which contains a shrine in the center of it. It is also commonly referred to as “Fear Mountain”, and “The Gateway to the Dead.” This is one of three mountains that are dedicated to the gods or Buddha in Japan. The name of these sites are referred to as Reizan sites. The Japanese believed that those who die cross over to the afterlife at these Reizan sites. The smell of sulfur is very thick and distinct as one walks in the area, and yellow stains are spotted throughout the grounds.
People who visit describe feeling an overwhelming and powerful force that they cannot explain. There is a mix of old and new Japanese architecture for the many temples that stand there. Included in these temples is a 9th century structure dedicated to the souls of the unborn. Piles of rocks of all sizes and shapes are scattered all over the site. Each one of these rocks represents the soul of someone who has died. The feelings of death and being watched cannot be escaped as one visits Mount Ozore.
