The Montauk Project is allegedly a series of secret United States government projects conducted at Camp Hero or Montauk Air Force Station on Montauk, Long Island solely for the purpose of developing exotic research and psychological warfare techniques including time travel. Due to limited evidence, many critics argue that the experiment is an unverified conspiracy theory or urban legend. The military facility is no longer in use, but the Montauk Air Force Station has been open to the public for over several years. Public access to the old military building however is prohibited.
The rumor about the project began roughly around the early-1980s. The project had supposedly originated from the account of Preston Nichols who claimed to of recovered repressed memories of involvement. Montauk, Long Island was the place for the experiment to take place because the government required a large and advanced radar dish. Combined with the place not being a major tourist attraction would make this the perfect spot to have a government project.
Most recently, in July 2008, a body of an unidentified creature was washed up on a Montauk beach. Photographs are posted online. Some conspiracy theorists believe it may be a trans dimensional being brought about by the government programs conducted in the locality. To view a picture of the “Montauk Monster”, click here. Conspiracy theorists also claim that in order to mask the nature of the project, the site was closed in 1969 and donated as a wildlife refuge/park, with the provision that everything underground within the “D1 Base” would remain the property solely to the United States Air Force so in reality Project Montauk remained in operation until 1987. The park had never been opened to the public, stating because of “environmental contamination”, an excuse many believe. The site was opened to the public on September 18, 2002 as Camp Hero State Park. The radar tower has been placed on the State and National Register of Historic Places. There is a plan to have a museum focusing on World War II and the Cold War-era history.
