McDonald’s Rumors

The McDonald’s Corporation has been the subject of many claims and rumors due to its immense size. Most of these claims have spread through word of mouth, with almost all of them completely without foundation. Starting around 1977, stories circulated claiming that the president of the company back then, the late Ray Kroc, was a member of the Church of Satan which can contribute to his success. However, satanic links have also been called at other large companies, like Procter & Gamble.
Another rumor that has been spreading about McDonald’s started in the 1970s which claimed that they were making burgers out of worms, kangaroo meat, horse meat, sawdust, spider eggs, cardboard, etc. Many believe that these accusations are the result of large corporations taking over and replacing the local restaurants in towns. Whether or not these rumors actually affect McDonald’s sales is unknown. What is known is that a United Press International story of November 1978 reported that McDonald’s sales were down as much as thirty percent in Atlanta, Georgia after the stories hit the area. McDonald’s responses to all rumors have been low-key and factual.
