John Lennon has been called one of the greatest songwriters of all time. His music and lyrics have captivated listeners since he first began recording music with the Beatles. He went on to sell millions of albums with this group and had a very successful solo career. His story ended in 1981 at the hands of a crazed gunman named Mark David Chapman. Chapman had been known by his friends to be a huge fan of Lennon. He even received an autograph from Lennon only days before he shot him.

Chapman had been obsessed with the book The Catcher in the Rye and saw the main character as a metaphor for himself. He decided to improve his character by doing the unthinkable. On a quiet evening, Chapman arrived at Lennon’s apartment on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. Lennon got out of a limousine and walked to his door. Chapman got on a knee and fired a few shots at Lennon killing him almost instantly. Chapman, however, did not flee the area. Instead he simply sat on the pavement and began to read his beloved book. The police arrived and arrested him for murder. He is still serving time in prison.
