On North Main Street in Decatur Illinois, is Lincoln Theatre. It is considered to be the most haunted theatre in the country. Ghosts encounters go back all the way from 1930 to present day. The site itself was supposedly built on a Native American Burial Ground. There was also a hotel that stood where the theatre does presently. This hotel burnt to the ground killing many people inside.
It is believed that the spirits of the ones who were killed in the fire, as well as the Native Americans in their resting place haunt the theatre. Originally, the theatre contained vaudeville performances or live performances. A lot of performers with big names came there to perform, but after 60 thriving years it was shutdown.
The owner wanted to restore the theatre to its former glory. Since the doors opened once again, the paranormal activity has increased considerably. Curtains have sounded like they were opening and closing, even though they haven’t moved at all. If one sits up in the balcony, you can see shapes and figures roaming throughout the auditorium. One ghost seen is of a woman watching the play down by the stage.
The spiral staircase located behind stage left is the most haunted place in the theatre. About 12 years ago, people were filming up on the staircase, they heard the sounds of someone following them up on the staircase. The cameraman ran out the building and never came back after that incident.
