Lafitte Guest House

A common belief in 19th century Louisiana was that once someone died, the soul of the person could enter a nearby mirror and be trapped inside there for all of eternity. In order to prevent this, people would cover the mirrors in their house with black cloths when there was someone sick in the house, or immediately following someone dying unexpectedly. At the Lafitte Guest House, paranormal activity has resulted in the failure to cover the mirror during one of these deaths. The image of a little girl has appeared in the second floor mirror of the Lafitte Guest House for years.

People would walk up to the mirror and it would seem as though this little girl was standing behind them crying, but upon turning around, she was not there. This ghost has also been seen floating out of room 22, which is the room right next to the mirror. The apparition floating has been recorded on film at least four times over the years. Recently, the mirror was removed from the hallway and no staff member has given an explanation as to why this action took place. However, even though sightings of the girl have decreased since the mirror was removed, they still do occur.

The ghost is believed to be that of five-year-old Marie, who was the daughter of Paul Joseph Gleises, and his wife, Marie Odalie Ducayet. She was one of thousands of children from New Orleans who died during the yellow fever epidemic in 1853. The ghost is also seen on the stairs going up to the 2nd floor, appearing to be crying and giving off the impression to those watching that she is lost. She prefers to stay close to room 21 and 22, most probably the children’s room when she lived there with her family.

The mirror is still up, as of Oct 2011. This is a great place to stay.
