La Llorona is said to be the ghost of a mother bereft of her children, sometimes said to of drowned by her own hand. She is supposedly seen along many waterways (creeks, rivers, canals, etc.) crying and calling out to her lost children. She also sometimes threatens or harms those that encounter her. Her appearance is said to change from place to place, ranging from a woman who is dressed in white to even a monster. This legend is said to warn young people not to linger after dark, especially in known haunted places.
