Robert Louis Stevenson has been called on of the greatest writer of English history. Born in Scotland, he became bedridden during his writing years. During this event, he began to write his most famous literary achievement. Entitled The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, it told the story of a well-renown doctor named Henry Jekyll. He is a bachelor who lives a humble life. He becomes fascinated with the concept of the duality of man.
The psychological theory was where his idea came from. He created a potion that transformed his body into a thin sulking hairy man who could act in a way Henry Jekyll could not. Jekyll becomes terribly addicted to the idea that he can become a different person. He can do things as Mr. Hyde that he cannot do as his normal daily-self. Yet, his experiment does run wary and he commits murder. The police eventually trace it back to Henry Jekyll where he meets a deadly end.
This book explored themes that still resonate with readers today. The main concept that is explored is the duality of man. The fact that we have two sides of us is a psychological concept that makes the story so interesting. The main lesson we can take from this story is that we do have both sides to our human nature. There is evil and good and it is up to us to decide which side will have the ultimate control over our destiny.
