How to Make a Water Filter

January 15th, 2009

There are two things to do with water in the wild, filter and purify. In the wild, all water must be filtered and purified because of all the contaminants it contains. As I have and will continue to instruct in later articles, purifying can be done be boiling it, using purification tablets, or by using some of the methods I have explained in other articles.

A filter will rid of all the large particles in the water and the boiling will get rid of those that the eye can’t see. Many of you may wonder what can be used as a filter in the wild and the answer is simple: a sock. If you pour the water through a sock, it will help filter all the visible objects. Be sure to have a bucket or cup ready to catch the water when it passes through. It is recommended that you do this a number of times to filter more out. It is also recommended that you line the sock with a much finer object, like sand or a handkerchief. Tripods also help support the filter. After each filter run, turn the whole filter inside out and rinse well.
