By April of 1945, Berlin had become a front-line city. With the Russians closing in on the east, and the Americans moving in from the west, Hitler’s Germany now faced certain defeat. As artillery and bombers pummeled the city, Hitler went into a large bunker underground with those closest to him. Up in the streets of the city, young boys, old men, and wounded soldiers were forced to fight by any means possible to defend Berlin. Those that disobeyed were shot without question.
With his ideology of the Third Reich being destroyed overhead, Hitler still believed in the idea of ultimate victory. He made radical plans to move armies that only existed on maps to move many miles and somehow crush the invaders. The Russians arrived in the city laying waste to everything in their path. It was only after Hitler was informed that their was no possible hope of victory that he decided to commit suicide. SS members also took cyanide capsules to made sure they would be spared from the horrors of being a prisoner of Russian soldiers.
