In 2003, fantasy-film director Guillermo Del Toro brought the Dark Horse Comics series Hellboy to the silver screen. With the success of other comic book-films in the past years, Columbia Pictures felt that this unknown character would fit well in movie theatres and would entertain audiences with its fantasy element. As well as being a science-fiction and fantasy story, it also could be considered an action film.
The film tells the story about a demon nicknamed “Hellboy.” During World War Two, Nazi scientists created a portal to another dimension. The idea was to unleash the demons to fight against the allies. A small red creature came out of the portal and was raised to be a protector for mankind. When Neo-Nazis plan to use demons as a means to unleash chaos upon earth, Hellboy must face the ultimate reality of who he and battle the forces of evil.
