Halloween has been called the greatest horror movie of all time. It made John Carpenter a mainstream director and created the genre of the slasher film. Michael Myers, the villain of the film, is almost universally recognizable. This film spawned numerous sequels, a remake, and mountains of memorabilia. Yet, when the film was being made, there was some doubt that this would just become a forgotten movie that would only have a few fans.

John Carpenter, the director of the film, had been an alumnus of film school and yearned to create an original film that would appeal to audiences. The result was the 1978 horror-classic Halloween. The film was revolutionary in the style which it was made. For example, not once in the film do we see a knife entering flesh. This creates tension and makes the film even scarier, since we cannot directly see the action. Carpenter utilized this technique similar to how Alfred Hitchcock used it with Psycho.

The film tells the story of a masked killer named Michael Myers who escapes from a mental hospital and returns to his hometown to bring a reign of terror upon the helpless citizens. One of which is Laurie Strode, a pretty High School student who babysit on Halloween night, only to be interrupted by Myers as he kills Laurie’s friends. Dr. Loomis, Michael’s psychologist chases Myers and attempts to kill him. Only Loomis knows how truly evil Myers is.
