Grand Rapids Home for Veterans

December 18th, 2008

The Grand Rapids Home for Veterans is located in Grand Rapids, Michigan and was built not too-long after the Civil War. There were no battles in Michigan, but 90,000 men from the state enlisted to fight for the Union Army. About 15,000 of these men were killed in action and never returned. The home was built for the veterans of the war that were sick or unable to take care of themselves. Next to the home is five acres left for a cemetery and memorial to the soldiers who have died.

Currently, there are 4,000 soldiers from the other wars that the nation was involved, laying next to the 214 men from the Civil War. This home and land has been haunted since its opening. Accounts include cold spots, electrical malfunctions, and strong feelings of being watched. In the cemetery and memorial area, people have seen full apparitions of men in Civil War uniforms walking around their section.

In this area, screams and moans are heard, as well as chills and flashlights that mysteriously stop working. Today, the site remains as a full time home, and approximately 300 veterans live there right now. They live amongst the soldiers of the past that refuse to leave the place they once called home.

I work at the Home for veterans and I haven’t seen any apparitions but there has been a few times that call lights will go off when no one is in the room, one time an electric razor turned on by itself. and most recently I was in the shower room with a member and the sharps container behind me flew off the wall and landed next to me. it was thrown by Something about 5 feet. I finished giving the shower and tried to keep my composure
