The Grand Canyon is a steep-sided gorge that is carved by the Colorado River in Arizona. It is contained in one of the first national parks of the United States, Grand Canyon National Park. It is believed that the Grand Canyon was created by the Colorado River over a six million year period. It is 277 miles long. The first recorded journey through the canyon via the Colorado River was in 1869 by Major John Wesley Powell. Temperatures for the Grand Canyon vary wildly throughout the year, with summer highs in the inner gorge exceeding 100 degrees Fahrenheit. United States President Theodore Roosevelt was a major factor in taking steps for preserving the Grand Canyon.
