Throughout Christian history, there has been many interpretations of who Judas truly was. From what we know of him, he was a revolutionary zealot who gave up his violent ways to follow Jesus and spread God’s message. So, if he was a disciple, what caused Judas to commit one of the worst crimes in human history?

The four Gospels that are currently in the Bible mention that Judas was hoping Jesus would gather enough people so the Roman occupiers would be overwhelmed. Judas’ aim was to proclaim Jesus as the king of the Jews and eventually overthrow the Romans. This story stuck in the minds of Christians throughout the world. However, there is a different theory; one that is never thoroughly explained by the church.

Aside from the four Gnostic gospels, many other gospels were written. One such is the Gospel of Judas. Now, this does not mean that Judas himself wrote it, but that someone used his name to tell a different version of Jesus’ story. In the gospel, Judas is Jesus’ favorite disciple. Jesus knows he must die, so he asks Judas and begs him to betray him. For when the Messiah is betrayed and handed over, he will be killed and then three days later rise from the dead. With much reluctance, Judas accepts.

This post was not meant to criticize any form of Christianity.
