Gollum has become one of the most interesting characters in J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings trilogy. His famous lines of “my precious” and “we wants it” have become commonplace in popular culture around the world. The character was memorable even before Peter Jackson’s film trilogy was realeased. Gollum is a prime example of a paranoid schizophrenic. His love for the Ring of power creates a double mindset within Hollum’s head. This is explored in detail in a scene in The Two Towers, where the naive side of Gollum has an argument with the darker side of his mind.

Gollums story is one of tragedy. Many years after the downfall of the Dark Lord Sauron, the one ring was lost. A small hobbit-like folk lived by the river Anduin. One day two young boys named Smeagol and Deagol were fishing. Deagol was pulled underwater and found the ring. Smeagol killed his cousin to have the ring. Smeagol used the ring to make himself invisible and to find out secrets. He was kicked by members of his family and he would bite them. His grandmother disowned him from the family. Smeagol started muttering to himself and starting calling himself Gollum.

For many years, Gollum lived alone in the mountains with only the ring to keep him company. A small hobbit named Bilbo Baggins got lost and found the Ring and took it from Gollum. Gollum set out to find the thief who stole the ring from him. But the ring would prove his downfall. Gollum/Smeagol was played by Andy Serkis in The Lord of the Rings trilogy.
