Gimli The Dwarf

In other mediums of visual arts, dwarfs have been portrayed as old and mostly grumpy people. They are short in stature and do not engage in much fighting. All that changed when J.R.R. Tolkien wrote The Lord of the Rings. One of the main characters of the story was a dwarf named Gimli. In this tale, dwarfs are mighty folk, equipped with axes and ready to fight to defend their treasures. Gimli is such a dwarf. We first meet him at the Council of Elrond where he is assigned to the fellowship that will guide Frodo Baggins on his quest to destroy the evil One Ring.
Gimli carries an ax on his back and hold on at the ready. Throughout the books and film, he is an essential figure in combat. His skill with an axe makes any foe regret taunting him. Gimli was portrayed by Welsh actor John Rhys Davies in Peter Jackson’s film trilogy. Though in the film, the character is used more for comedic purposes rather than for a skilled warrior whose ax helps forge victory for the free peoples of Middle-Earth.
