Fort Ontario is located in Oswego, New York and is truly a beautiful site. Walking through the main gates is as if you are walking back in time. The fort dates back to the mid-1700s, and has been occupied by the British, French, and the United States over this time span. The United States has had control of the fort since 1776. It also served as a refuge for thousands of people who fled Germany during World War II.
Three ghosts that remain prominent here are Lt. Basil Dunbar, George Fikes, and an unknown spirit in a blue uniform. Lt. Dunbar was killed in a duel with Lt. Penier in 1759 and George Fikes died here in 1782. Paranormal activity was recorded in the Office Quarters, in particular, number one. People have reported the door slamming, footsteps, and the laughter of children. A banging was heard once, and it was so loud that it seemed as if it was coming from every direction. Fort Commander Paul Lear reports that the re-enactors from both the Revolutionary and Civil Wars have had experiences of their own.
Their experiences consist mostly in Office Quarters number two. In the middle of the night, they are often woken up by men’s voices. They get up to investigate whose talking so loud and never find anyone. In the Enlisted Men’s Barracks there is the story of a murder, where Private Marks and Private Clemmins got into a quarrel here many years ago. Marks turned Clemmins in for misuse of rations. In response to this, Clemmins went upstairs and shot Marks to death. Clemmins was imprisoned in the guard house, where he drank poison and died.
