Fort Delaware

Fort Delaware is located on the Delaware Bay, one mile away from Delaware City. Construction on the Fort was completed two years before the Civil War and was intended to become a Prisoner of War camp. The building is in the shape of a pentagon that covered six acres. The 32 foot tall walls are surrounded by a moat that is thirty feet wide. The main entrance is set up by a drawbridge going over the moat with torches on each side. The fort is considered to be one of the most haunted places in the Northeast.
Conditions for prisoners here were obviously harsh, and about 3,000 men are believed to have met their fate within these walls. In the dungeon, people have reported unexplainable noises. These include people moaning and the banging of chains. People have even seen the images of Confederate Soldiers running around the ramparts. Others have also speculated that these men are the prisoners who were trying to escape the horrors of the prison long, long ago.
Many pictures have been taken at the fort and they give more evidence that the fort is haunted. These pictures reveal orbs, shadowy mists, and even what appears to be the figure of a soldier. There is also a cemetery on the property where most of these prisoners were buried. Fort Delaware is currently a state park and candlelight Ghost Tours are given during the weeks leading up to Halloween.
