Flying Dutchman
The Flying Dutchman is the name of a famous ghost ship that is seen off the shore of Cape Town, South Africa. In 1641, Captain Hendrik van der Decken swore to his crew that he would take them all past the Cape of Good Hope, and home to Amsterdam. However, the ship was lost in this dangerous spot of ocean, and over the hundreds of years there have been consistent reports of the Flying Dutchman still trying to get past the Cape of Good Hope. In the 1800s, there were reports from ships that they were hailed by the Flying Dutchman; although they were unaware it was a ghost ship at the time of the interactions.
Captain van der Decken would call across to the other ship, asking them if they could mail personal letters of the crew for them. Royal Navy ships have been reporting the sight of the vessel for nearly two centuries now. The ship is believed to have a red glow to it at night, and as for anyone that does see the ship, it is considered to be a bad omen.
